Pioneer Woman

I have a list of crafty projects to complete before the boy arrives, and I have this weird compulsion that these things HAVE to be done in order for me to go into labor. But add in not sleeping and dealing with an increasingly difficult toddler, and these projects are just NOT magically getting done. However, I'm feeling very Pioneer Womanish today and making our laundry soap. Maybe I'll bust out the sewing machine tonight and get a few other things done, too.

  1. Hey pioneer woman! How long does it take to grate the Zote soap for your laundry detergent? I'd thought about getting the recipe from you but I would have to know what I was getting into.

  2. The Zote is really soft and grates quite readily (it's super fluffy). I pause a few times, but I think I did the whole bar in under 10 minutes (with pauses) and the bar is gigantic (14.1oz). Fels Naptha is called for in a lot of soap recipes, and it's much harder (and harsher). I used castile soap, too, and that was really hard and took forever to grate. Zote is hard to find, though, or it was for me. I ended up locating it at a small Mexican grocery store in Fells Point.

  3. The recipe:
    1 bar Zote
    2.5 c washing soda
    1 ¼ c. Borax
Grate soap. Mix all ingredients in a food processor. For light load, use 1 tbsp. For heavy or heavily soiled load, use 2 tbsps. Yields: 3 Cups detergent.
